11-23-05 Jerry Courtway sent a video recommendation from HARM. Here's a capsule:

Later in the season, MAVERICK staged a sensational duel in the Final heat of the Silver Cup with the Bill Cantrell-chauffeured GALE V. For ten dynamic heart-stopping laps, Stead and Cantrell fought it out with neither driver holding an advantage. MAVERICK eventually won but only after a titanic struggle. It was quite simply some of the finest competition ever witnessed.

If one were to place a video in a time capsule to illustrate 1950s Unlimited racing at its best, the 1958 Silver Cup Final Heat would be an eloquent testimonial.

The Hydroplane Museum has a one hour highlight film of this race. If there is enough interest in the race we would be happy to convert it to DVD or Videoand offer it for sale. I'd like the folks on this list to drop me an E-mail if you think we should take the time and money to make a DVD out of this.

A BIG PAR-TAY!
I just want to thank everyone who sent in their banquet reservations already. I have communicated with our caterer, given them our final reservations, and they will be feeding 84 of us at the 2005 R/CU ER/CU Awards Banquet! 84! Is that some kind of record, or what?!? Big thanks goes out to Mr. Chester Lepinski and the Czar for beating the bushes in the 11th hour. As always these two guys came crashing through for us and really got the turnout turned up.

PLEASE NOTE ONE IMPORTANT CHANGE:

Forget that BYOB idea. Just erase it. It never happened. Instead, we will have beer and wine available for purchase by the glass. Just don't forget to tip the barkeep. (That's my boy!)

SILENT AUCTION DONATIONS NEEDED:
Now, our attention turns to silent auction donations. If you have a donation, please let Nelson know about it as soon as possible. (nelson@noslencommunication.com) Your donations will help bolster th coffers of each club, which is always helpful. We have some Chris Denton photo disks, a couple of spectacular prints, a boat cover, and even a roundnose hull, (from any Newton plan set) already in the auction lineup. This should be fun! I look forward to seeing all of my friends and fellow competitors at the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum, on November 12th. Again, thanks for sending in your banquet reservations.

Much appreciated!

Marc Connelly

10-24-05 Roger Newton's Movie Night

Now that the hydroplane season as drawn to a close, are you already going through withdrawals? Well, we have just the ticket. On Friday, November 4th at 6:00pm, long time museum member Roger Newton will be hosting another one of his popular museum movie nights. Roger has an extensive collection of historic hydroplane footage. This Friday, Roger will be showing more classic footage from his video archive. Admission is only $5. This is an excellent opportunity to get the wife and kids out of the house, or to introduce a friend to the excitement of unlimited hydroplane racing. We'll see you at the movies!Banquet Menu Revealed After Insider Cracks. Leak investigation (and possible indictments) To Follow.

10-23-05 Make your reservations today for the 2005 R/CU & ER/CU Annual Awards Banquet.

The invitations to the R/CU &ER/CU Annual Awards banquet will go out via snail mail today, and via email tonight, but you can download your copy right here, right now, at either the R/CU or ER/CU websites to get your reservation in place. Please don’t procrastinate- we need to let the caterers know the meal count by November 1st.  The cost is $25 per person and the event will go from 5:30 until 9pm or whenever we are all tired of rehashing the 2005 racing season.

This year, we are going to host the event at the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum, which is an excellent facility for us and a natural home for any hydro fan. Dr. Ken Muscatel will be our speaker and he will be both exciting and entertaining as he presents his enthusiastic and optimistic vision for the future of the sport.  As a Museum Board member, I have come to know Ken a bit pver the past few years and I really appreciate his love for the sport. He will be an excellent speaker.

We have made an arrangement for overnight accomodations at the Doubletree Inn at Southcenter, which is just minutes away from the event. There will be a silent auction, so if you have any items to donate, please let me know by contacting me at: marc@in-ad.com. All donations are deeply appreciated.

To cut down on cost just a bit, we are not going to have a wet bar on site this year. Instead, if you wish, you can bring the libation or beverage of your choice and we will have plenty of room in the Museum frig as well as an ice basin for you. The dinner menu will be posted here on the website in the next day or so.

This is going to be a fun party with- I guarentee you- some real surprises. We all had a highly competitive and fun racing season and this is the night that we can all get together and bask in the glory of our races well run. I hope to see you all there!

10-23-05 Just a reminder about the members meeting scheduled for Sunday November 6 at the Hydroplane museum in Kent at 2:00. Two items on the agenda will be nominations for three board positions for 2006, and a decision on the use of affordable Li-po batteries as a power option for the coming year. Plus other items of interest, so hope to see you all there.

10-17-05 More Lipo action: Saturday and Sunday brought extensive testing and comparing of Lipo and GP 3300 batteries. Batteries were swapped back and forth and ran side by side in the Muvalong, Lil Buzzard, Vernor's, and the 66 Notre Dame. The Lipos were run hard, flipped, dunked, and barrel rolled, and still came back for more. Impressively easy and fun. Interested in testing them yourself? Contact Jeff Campbell at his E-mail.

10-17-05 A lot of talk about li-poly batteries. Here are some links from E-RCU members:

8-14-05 Ron Daum Reports: Just thought you would like to know, Miss Pepsi made her debut on Bellevue Pond at the picnic. She turns great (horizontal rooster tail and all), looks like a mahogany cigar on the straights, digs a trough and has no vices. A few small things to iron out but a magnificent first outing none the less. She will be at the Seafair for at least a test run and maybe competition. I was busy playing so I have no pictures but Roger did take some. Hopefully one of Pepsi and Thriftway underway side by side.

7-10-05 It has come to the attention of E-RCU that Seafair has decided against running any vintage hydroplane exhibition due to: One,a perceived lack of space in the pits, and two, a perceived lack of interest from spectators. If this is not acceptable, or contrary to your opinion please e-mail your concern to Seafair at: info@SEAFAIR.com

5-26-05 Forwarded from the Powerboat list:

This afternoon I got the sad news that Tom Frankhouser passed away on Sunday, after learning a month ago that he had lung cancer. Tom was one of the many successful Miss Budweiser crew chiefs. And...Tom was one of the really good people I had the pleasure of knowing in my 35 years around the sport. He probably would have been in the pits today to see the vintage boats run. He was usually there, surrounded by a group of the "old timers" .His absence will be noticeable and he will be missed.

5-03-05 Roger Newton Reports:

This weekend we traveled to a spot in Eastern Washington. The pond is in Ellensburg where the wind blows most of the time. Not this time though. The water was good all weekend. After the last race I reworked the sponsons. Went down from about 5 degrees to 3 Degrees. And made them shallower. This is what we run on most Nitro boats. First test I had an X462/ blade. This is what I thought worked best. Going down the backstretch on the second lap it hit a couple of small wakes, bounced three times and rolled over. Not a good beginning. I had moved the batteries back a couple of cells to change the CG but I didnt like that so I moved them back to the original position. Next run, same prop. rolled over in the right corner at full speed. So I started changing props. What I found worked best was an Octura X560/2 blade. My first heat on Sunday I had a good start on the inside and won the heat beating 4 other boats in the process. This was a legitimate win. Second heat it died in the mill. One of the connections on the motor came unsoldered. It took me awhile to fix it. In the process I missed the third heat. In the fourth heat I once again had a dynamite start and led thru the first turn but I noticed it didnt have the speed as before. It started slowing down and the other boats got around me. I did manage to finish the heat for a third place finish. The only thing I can figure is that I grabbed the wrong set of batts. They werent fully charged. Bummer. Charged up another set and did a demo before the final heat. I had a good lap of 17 seconds. The really fast boats were around 15 seconds. I of course didnt make the final. There were 36 boats at the race and I finished in fifteenth spot. I sure am looking forward to going to the Nats next month. I have learned so much this past month or so and I know I will learn a whole bunch more back there.

Also, membership can be handled on-line if you haven’t applied yet – the member number can be assigned at the time of application.

4-20-05 The April meeting minutes are finally loaded. Click here.

4-20-05 The Champion Sparkplug race at Shady Lake was run a little looser than it should. As a result, the Harmsworth Trophy Race this weekend will be used as an example of how the race day should be handled. This involves everything from setup, running the heats and cleanup after the race. It goes without saying that the CD or his agent should be the first one to the site on race day. Arrangements for the trailer/club gear and course setup should be made before race day. The course should be set at least two hours before the drivers meeting to allow for testing and rookie qualifications. Rookies need to be identified and properly qualified before the drivers meeting. (The board members should also help with this). The Pit Boss needs to be identified prior to the drivers meeting. Referees and turn judges need to be set prior to the one-minute gun before a heat. See the other duties of the CD ‘s in the rule book.

4-20-05 This Sunday, April 24, is the third annual running of the Harmsworth Trophy. The location is Twin Lakes in Marysville. Driving directions can be found on the schedule page on the website. The equipment will be at the site by 7:00, so come help set up. Drivers meeting will be at 10:30 sharp with racing commencing at 11:00. Looks as thought the weather may cooperate for this weekend, so it should be a great day to race and socialize.

IMPORTANT:Twin Lakesdoes not provide power, so we will need as many portable generators as possible. If you have one or can get one, please bring it along.

Harmsworth rules will be as follows:

4-19-05 10 Vintage boats and drivers ventured into a slightly wet, cool and breezy Coulon Park for the Governors Cup exhibition race to help promote the upcoming. Thanks to Jim Lilly for securing the shelter, the pits were set up in the dry. Craig Bradshaw brought the promotional board ready to display – only problem was that no one from promotions bothered to stop by. Not letting a little thing like that interfere with the day, racing began at noon and was wrapped up by 2:30. Jeff Campbell with the Lil Buzzard managed to avoid the wind gusts to score a perfect day of 1600 points. Mike Campbell with the Miss U.S. takes the prize for most acrobatic finish. In the final the boat did a 360 flip, looked for a second that it was done for the day, but then bounced back on plane to finish second overall. Jim Clark in the ’67 Bardahl and John Williams starting as the trailer in the Miss Madison finished the final heat in that order. Boats in the final trying to finish upside down, but not succeeding, were Robbie Roberts with the Vernors, Rick Lentz in the ’58 Bardahl and new rookie Jason Hartley driving the Pay N’ Save. Also helping to fill the field were Dave Lilly with the My Gypsy, Craig Bradshaw with the $ Bill and Gary Levander with the Tahoe Miss.

It was a fun day of racing. To help the promotion gang, remember that the Madison movie opens this Friday at several theaters in the area. Plan to attend at least one of them – it will help give some recognition to the sport, and besides, it’s a pretty good movie, for everyone in the family.

4-19-05 The webmaster is back from Southern California so updates will be more consistent again.

4-12-05 Jim Lilly has announced that he has decided to complete his 30' Jones cabover as the 1973 Lincoln Thrift, rather that the U-65 1978 Squire Shop

4-12-05 Jim Clark has his photo site going again this season with super photos for very reasonable prices. Click here for the link.

4-12-05 Rick Lentz adds:An exhibition race is scheduled for April 17 at Coulon Park. The trailer will arrive about 9:00 in the morning, and help will be needed to set up the course and scaffolding. Jim Lilly has secured the shelter for the day for our use. This race will be for Vintage class boats only. The day will be run the same as a regular race, but points will not accrue for the club’s season high points. Fee will be $5 per boat. The drivers meeting will be at 11:30 with racing to start at noon. There will be three preliminary heats and the final. If enough boats are there we can add a connie. If you want to bring a modern boat, we can run those after the “race”.

If you have questions or want to order, contact Dave Gardner at drgracing@att.net, or call him at 425-869-7697. Deadline for orders and payment will be February 28.

1-20-05 “After further review”, it has been determined to hold the February club meeting on Sunday, February 6 at 2:00 at H.A.R.M. Please disregard the previous notice stating the 13th. The RCU show is still on for Saturday, February 5 – Noon to 4:00 at H.A.R.M.
