Notes about the model: Jeff Campbell built this boat as the Hemi version. It suffered a crash at the Harmsworth and was rebuilt into the '71 craft. Gale Whitestine bought the turnkey setup right before the President's Cup in 2004. Gale went on to win the 2004 Atomic Cup and finish 3rd at the 2004 Seafair Trophy Race. Wanting to return to racing, Craig Mullen aquired the hull & hardware in Feb 07.

Notes about the real boat: Jim Lucero was named crew chief of the Pay 'n Pak team in prior to the start of the 1971 season. One of the most successful crew chiefs of all time, and one of the true pioneers advancing the art of Unlimited Hydroplane engineering, Lucero shared the same spirit of innovation with Heerensperger. With Heerensperger's support, Lucero would introduce several successful innovations, but first he had to start small. During the off-season, the cabover Pride of Pay 'n Pak was reconfigured with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine and the driver behind the engine. New cowlings were constructed, including a very distinctive David Smith headrest which extended from the cockpit to the tail in a cone shape. The tail included vestigial horizontal elements for aesthetics. This beautiful "new" boat made her debut in 1971 with Billy Schumacher at the wheel. The boat showed promise early in the season, but experienced the normal setbacks as the team worked to dial the boat in. Her promise was realized when she won three consecutive wins races at the end of the 1971 season. (From: Unlimited Excitement).

Notes about 2007: Craig attended five ERCU races with the 1971 Pride of Pay 'n Pak, finishing 19th in the Red Dot Championship Series. He also won the NAMBA National Championship on Lake Tye (Monroe) in late June.
